Food Hygiene Training

 

Why is Training Important?

It is a legal requirement to ensure that all food handlers have an appropriate understanding of good food hygiene and food safety hazards. The aim of food hygiene training is to ensure that individuals have the knowledge required to produce safe food.

Although the practices and procedures within each business will differ considerably, the best way for food handlers to develop a fundamental understanding of how to safely handle and prepare open unwrapped food will be to attend a food hygiene training course.

Our Level 2 Certificate

Nottingham City Council has produced its own Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety in Catering course. We normally run a course every month, which is delivered by our own highly qualified and experienced Environmental Health Officers. The number of places on each course is limited to 20 in order to ensure that we can attempt to fully answer any questions specific to your premises during the sessions.

At a very competitive cost of £70 per candidate, it may be slightly more expensive than an on-line course, but the opportunity to ask any burning questions throughout, not to mention expert tuition, makes it an essential choice.

In some circumstances, it may be possible for us to consider a Group Booking and deliver a course specifically for a particular organisation (minimum of 10 candidates). Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Course Content

The course has been designed to ensure that it covers all areas of food hygiene detailed in the Catering Guide produced by the British Hospitality Association. This is recognised by the Food Standards Agency and Environmental Health Officers alike.

An emphasis has been placed on the day to day practicalities of working in a catering kitchen and consists of the following modules:

  • Introduction and simple microbiology
  • What can go wrong at each step in a business
  • Time, temperature and associated checks
  • Food poisoning and how to prevent it
  • Food allergy and intolerance
  • Food safety management
  • Food safety law
  • Personal hygiene
  • Cleaning and disinfection
  • Pest control

The trainer will provide real examples of good and bad practices throughout, including major food poisoning outbreaks and how they could have been prevented.

Course Information

The course duration is approximately 6 hours, usually over 2 sessions, one week apart, although some are taught in a single session. Please see the course dates and times below for details.

Your knowledge will be assessed at the end of the course by answering 30 multiple choice questions. Candidates who get at least 20 out of 30 correct will receive a Certificate to recognise their attainment.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer the training or the assessment in any languages other than English. However, we will try our utmost to meet your needs in any practical way we can.

Cost and Payment

The cost of courses per person is £70

Payment can be made either by card, cheque or postal order. Cheques should be made payable to 'Nottingham City Council'.

The enrolment form and course fee should be sent at least 10 days prior to the date of the course.

Once we have received your enrolment form, full course details will be sent to you. Please note that in the unfortunate event that we do not receive sufficient enrolments for the course to go ahead we will contact you one week before the start date of the course.

If you wish to cancel or transfer to another course within 10 days of the course date, a 50% cancellation fee will be charged.

If you fail to attend a course you have booked a 100% cancellation fee will be charged.

If the test needs to be re-taken a £20.00 fee is charged.
